Marek and I were invited to attend Code::XtremeApps:: as judges last week. Before this competition, we had held OpenShift talks with teachers and students in Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Singapore Management University.
Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP)
At NYP we had a small problem with connectivity, and were not able to connect to the internet during the demo of deploying the application on hosted OpenShift.
However, as OpenShift is awesome and flexible in deployment models, we spun up a local instance on our laptop and did the demo locally.
Either way the audiences were awesome and we enjoyed the presentation.
Singapore Polytechnic (SP)
The crowd at SP was bigger and way more active. We enjoyed the presentation very much as we had a lot of questions. The audiences were engaged and liked the OpenShift concepts.
Singapore Management University (SMU)
This presentation was on a different day then the polytechnics. The audiences were older and there were more external people.
They were very engaged and asked a lot of questions. We also gave out quite a lot of stickers and CD boxes to those who were active.
Code::XtremeApps:: is an annual 24-hour, round-the-clock computer programming/code jam competition organised by the Information Technology Standards Committee (ITSC), an industry partnership supported by IDA Singapore and SPRING Singapore.
Theme of 2012: Silver Generation – supporting the needs of the elderly by leveraging the use of ICT
As the recommended PaaS for hosting the applications in Code::XtremeApps::, OpenShift had given a Quick Guide to all developers. And we also prepared an OpenShift welcome package for each of them – includes a cool t-shirt, notepad, Fedora 17 CD and JBoss Developer Studio 5 CD.
24-hour OpenShift supporting was provided to all the developers during the competition:
Preliminary review after 24 hours. Besides laptops, tablets and smartphones, developers also used Kinect, raspberry pi, programmable remote and heart-beat monitor etc. Really awesome ideas!
The Finals! A team was demonstrating their application on both PCs and mobile devices.
The winners will be announced at the Prize Presentation Ceremony on August 23.
