OpenShift Commons Briefing Summary
In this OpenShift Commons Briefing, Itamar Heim & Fabian Deutsch (Red Hat) introduced KubeVirt – a project whose aim is to converge the future data center using Kubernetes as its infrastructure. Kubernetes is a great orchestration tool for containers, but the team behind kubeVirt declared “why stop there?” Containers and virtual machines are going to co-exist in the data center. Let’s re-envision our virtualization and cloud solutions with Kubernetes as a single underlying platform.
KubeVirt is a virtual machine management add-on for Kubernetes. The aim is to provide a common ground for virtualization solutions on top of Kubernetes.
Itamar Heim & Fabian Deutsch covered how they are implementing a caring and stateful environment to run pet VMs in containers on top of Kubernetes—without contradicting its core assumptions. They also discussed gaps and how the project team plans to tackle those, drawing on their many years of experience with KVM and and caring for pet VMs (and cats). The session also included a demo of how the team is doing this today and where they want to go next with kubeVirt.
